  1. I am ripping my dvds and using virtualdubmod to encode them to xvid. I have a problem though, some movies i can encode with a resolution of 700x whatever, but others i have to get really small, like 550x whatever. I get an error when i try to encode them with a bigger resolution. The error code is:

    "Cannot start video compression:

An unknown error occured (may be corrupt data). (error code -100)"

But when i try to encode that video to a smaller resolution it works. Anyone know why?

  2. That error usually happens when you have frame dimensions that the output codec doesn't like. For Xvid you should always use a multiple of 2 (ie, use even, not odd numbers). Multiples of 16 are even better.

  3. Thanks, the 16 multipler worked.

  4. Does that go for all video formats? Because 2.35 aspect ratio wont allow me to use 688x293.

  5. Most codecs require at least a power of 2. Most lossy codecs use 16x16 blocks during encoding so multiples of 16 usually work best.

  6. Try 688x288 - both numbers are divisible by 16. You won't notice the difference between that and 688x293.
