Before I had firewire or a capture card I had recorded my home videos to vhs. They then progressed to dvd via a stand-alone dvd-recorder. Now the vob files are on my pc.
Here is the thing, converting this vob to any format (and i have tried them all) It totally distorys the clarity in comparison to the vob file (which does seem to be interlaced)
Top is VHS bottom is the best i can get using DVSD avi
Not only this but blank frames appear after conversion and the audio goes out of sync.. these problems i can sort out in premiere unless someone has a better answer...
This is the only dvd that is giving me greif, others do not seem to have a problem??
So how do i retain the quality of the original vob?

Perhaps you should tell us what you are trying to do? I am a little confused by your question. You have VOB files on your PC which are the files that makes up a DVD. Why don't you burn them to a DVD and keep them. These files are made up of MPEG2 files which I assume were converted from avi files that you had transfered? When you go from avi to mpeg you will lose some quality. If you then encode those same mpeg files again, you will again lose quality. Why are you trying to go back to avi files? Please give us some more information.
Thanks,

That's the nature of digitizing a low resolution signal with DVD recorder, any further compression will lead to pixelation etc... You can only re-author them.

When I origninally recorded the camcorder content, it was all just dumped together onto the VHS..
I would like now to use premiere to edit my footage into serveral dvds or chapters...
I now only have my dvd copy of the vhs and Vob is not recognised in premiere pro
I have tried the following methods to retreive the video content into a usable format on my pc
Imtoo dvd ripper plat
changing the .vob to .mpg extention (one of the best results but has audio errors)
converting .vob to mpeg2 @ 6000kps @4000kps @3000kps
Converting .vob to huffyuv, divx, dvsd, msu lossless -
Rip the DVD in DVD Decrypter, in IFO mode. DO NOT try to open the VOB files directly.
The DVD Decrypter rip should give you one long VOB file, not several.
Open that long VOB in VirtualDub (an MPEG friendly version) and then save the video as an uncompressed AVI file.
Open that in Premiere.
Your problems are all because you are attempting to mess with individual VOB files.Want my help? Ask here! (not via PM!)

Your priorities are completely upside down. Why spend that kind of money on an editing program when your problem is poor camcorder quality to start? Sell Premiere Pro and use the money to buy a decent DV format camcorder.
To fix what you have, buy a program that takes VOB files as an input or use the guides for VOB to virtualdub + necessary audio demux/decompression.
Alternate is to use that new DV camcorder in pass through mode to recapture the VHS to DV format and then use Premiere Pro to edit the video and another program to author the DVD.
BTW: What is with the semi-fisheye? -
haaaaa edDV, this footage was taken along time ago and i dont have that equipment anymore 1998.. I own a Sony HC90 nowdays..
The Aspheric lens back then was of great help for extreme close up perspective.. I take it you dont like it???
I just didn't take it off for this footage. Nowdays I use premiere everyday for my work. Dont you think i have already tried demuxing the audio... it comes out at a different "beatmap" which i can resample but I'm looking for a solution not a repair job
@LordSmuf, your my hero, I much appreciate the direction and help you have given..
yes I confess to trying to work on individual vob files and your advice is right on.

after resizing the footage (becasue of the lens compression) I now have resonable wisescreen video quality.
