  1. Hello,
I have a philips DVD recorder which I use to burn my old VHS tapes.
I also use it to backup my old analog home-movies.
For that: I record on a DVD+RW, I rip (DVD shrink, for better compatibility and loosing the created menu) and I burn on a DVD+R.
When I want to convert the VOB's to AVI files, for further editing, I have a strange problem:
The resulting picture gives a very vertically-streched image which I cannot use in an editor.
The pricture is completely out of size (with 350, hight 572). It should be the other way around???
The strange thing is that when I play the recorded DVD on any (!) player it looks just fine. The problem only occurs when converting on a PC or play with media-player.
Does anyone know this problem and, more important, how to fix it?
By the way: Normal (DVD-SHRINK-ripped-)DVD's work fine.
Or maybe there's another way to import VOB's into Pinnacle studio8...

    THNX

The resolution will probably be 360 x 576, also known as Half-D1. This mode is used by some (many ?) recorders when the running time gets past a certain length. It allows for a lower bitrate to be used. Essentially it reduces the horizontal resolution by 50%. On playback the image is resized and the image, while softer than it might have been, still can look pretty good. It is DVD compliant, which is why it plays back OK. Not all software recognises half-D1 though, especially editing software.

I don't edit VOBs or even have a DVD Recorder, so I can't recommend any specific software for editing half-D1 footage.
