can anyone tell me which program encodes AVI format to DVD format in quickest time but with good quality? I have been using TMPGEnc Xpress but it takes quite a while to encode. Is there any other programs that are quicker? Also what is the best DVD authoring program?

quick and good quality are usually opposite each other. Speed compromises quality. The fastest, quality solution would be something that allows you to use CCE or ProCoder as your encoding engine. This wont be as fast as something like ConvertXtoDVD, but the quality will be better - it's always a trade off.
The best compromise, for my money, is ConvertXtoDVD. If you only need very simple text menus, it can do that as well. If you want to make menus for it, pairit with TDA. It isn't the best authoring tool out there, but again, the best demands time, which you don't seem to have.Read my blog here.

i too think convertxtodvd is fast and the latest versions have improved on the quality. for a little better quality cyberlink's powerdirector 5 is a pretty nice tool. takes about twice as long as convertxtodvd but with a bump in control and quality of output.
