    Hi, i'm going crazy.

I want to watch an anime episode on my PSP. The file is in .mkv

It has english and japanese spoken languages, and english subtitles.

    I WANT:

to watch this file on my PSP, japanese audio and english subs ...

    I HAVE:
Downloaded tons of video programs, seen enough google for the next two years, and i have no results ..

I read on videohelp that there is a program called MKV Extract that can help me...

so i downloaded and installed MKVExtractGUI-1.6.0.

After installing the program, i started it up. The first thing i get is an error.

    "cant find libiconv.dll"

fine, so i found it on google

    next error:

    " cant find cygz.dll"

so i found it again on google

    next error:

    " cant find cygwin1.dll"

last one ... found it with google ...

So i was convinced that everything was OK => NOT !

I am able to start the program, but when i load my video file i get:

"The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000142). Click on OK to terminate the application."

And the journey ends here ...

Can anyone help me ?? why do i have these errors? are there any other programs that can help me ?

    Thank you !!

Do all those files exist within the zip (or whatever format it's in) archive? I've seen problems like this happen when zip archives aren't properly extracted (such as subdirectories). I'd have to say that I haven't had similar problems with previous versions of MKVExtractGUI - but corecodec.org seems to be down, so I can't take a look at the archive for 1.6.0 myself and check the contents.

Edit: After checking, I think I see what your initial problem is - you didn't get the mkvtoolnix components MKVExtractGUI needs (the MKVExtract package doesn't include the mkvtoolnix components). Go to http://www.bunkus.org/videotools/mkvtoolnix/downloads.html, scroll down to the Windows section at the bottom, and download either the full installer (mkvtoolnix-unicode-1.7.0-setup.exe) or both of the .rar archives next to it (MKVToolnix 1.7.0 and the runtime). Extract both into (or point the setup at) MKVExtractGUI's directory.

The above archives do, in fact, contain cygz.dll, libiconv.dll, etc. But not the cygwin dll, which surprised me (though I didn't need to go get it, because I already have a cygwin setup on my computers.)

MKVExtract will simply just disassemble the streams into their elementary formats, though, IIRC (so you'll have a video stream (not AVI), audio and subtitle streams. You'll probably need something to convert the video stream to AVI (or directly to MP4 for the PSP) and then mux in the audio (and since you're wanting to view the result on a PSP, hard-encode the subtitles). celtic_druid would probably be able to explain the whole process and exactly what you need better than I would. (I usually just convert AVI videos directly to PSP format... haven't really tried converting MKV/OGM for the PSP, iPod, etc.)

That's because the comma after the link was somehow added to the link. Sorry about that (though I'm not sure whether or not it was my fault. )

    Let's try this again: http://www.bunkus.org/videotools/mkvtoolnix/downloads.html

Owkay, it seems to be working (the link that is).

the program works, and it doesn't seem that difficult.

I'm a step closer to achieving my goal, however i have a new problem.

When i open the mkv file, i get 2 audio tracks, 1 video track and 1 subtitle track.

I figure that if i deselect the english track, i have what i want. (so i'm left with japanse audio, subtitles and video). So i tried it,
but when i do this everything is fine however the subtitles have vanished when i view the new output file.
Even though they were still selected when i started muxing my new file.

Everything else is in order, i have the right video, and the right audio. I read
in the help file that it is possible that some subtitle charsets can give problems and
    become invisible.

As you know there's a whole list with subtitle charsets. How do i know which one
    to select?

I know that if i drag a mkv file to my psp, the psp will take the file as it is. So the only
thing i have to do is fix these subs.

    Any sugestions?

thank you very much ! i really feel i'm getting closer !

I'll have to leave this one for someone else to answer, as I haven't really done much work with subtitles. Sorry about that.

thing i have to do is fix these subs.
Hmm? The PSP doesn't have (native) MKV support, as far as I know (sure, you can write an MKV to the Memory Stick, but the PSP won't know what to do with it. ) Are you sure you weren't using a MP4/H.264 stream, in that case?

    oh yeah, you're right i used 3GP_converter ...

3 GP normally doensn't support mkv files, but i just tried dragging a mkv file into it ... the program didn't show a "progress line" (you know, from 0 to 100%) so i just waited untill me file appeared. And it did.

When i tested it, the quality was perfect, english audio with english subs.

But taht's nog what i want

Hmm i hope someone can help with my subs ...

Thx anyway for all your help

PSP's don't support ttext subs right? That would mean that you have to hard encode. Numerous ways you could do that, such as mencoder with -aid # and -sid# to sepecify the subs, then I guess output to a raw 264 stream and mux to mp4 with mp4box. AVISynth with directshowsource(), then encode with whatever.
