LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - "Futurama" has a future.

Comedy Central has resurrected the former Fox animated series from "The Simpsons" creator Matt Groening and David X. Cohen. At least 13 new episodes will be produced -- the first since the series' original run from 1999-2003.

The new batch is part of a deal the cable network made with 20th Century Fox Television last year to pick up syndicated rights to the existing "Futurama" library of 72 episodes. Comedy Central also had an option to air any new episodes produced.

New and old episodes will begin airing in 2008 on Comedy Central. Actors Billy West, Katey Sagal and John DiMaggio have agreed to return as voices for "Futurama."

"We are thrilled that Matt Groening and 20th Century Fox Television have decided to produce new episodes of 'Futurama' and that Comedy Central will be the first to air them," said David Bernath, senior vice president for programming at the network.

"There is a deep and passionate fan base for this intelligent and very funny show that matches perfectly with our audience, and it is great that we can offer them not just the existing library but something they've never seen as well."

"Futurama" isn't the first series to return to air after cancellation. The Fox animated series "Family Guy" returned to the network last year after getting a second wind on DVD and late-night cable.

2008? I know it takes a while to produce animated programs but two years?

    Another story:

Really sucks that Adult Swim will no longer be airing Futurama.

Yeah I saw more Futurama there then on FOX.

Good stuff though, they said this a few months ago but confirmation is nice.

It might be because they are (supposedly) working on 3 direct-to-DVD Futruama movies.... Those might be coming out before the new episodes.

Or maybe that is when Comedy Centeral gets the rights to air the show....

    Either way, I'll take it

They said it was only the second show ever to return to production which is bogus. Doctor Who also returned to production after a long absence. They ruined the whole series but it's back in production.

They didn't say it was the second show "ever" to return to production They just said that Family Guy did the same thing--->

The show "Dragnet" did the same thing - it aired from 1951-1959, then came back 1967 and ran through 1970.

Speaking of, the last two episodes of Dr Who were kinda crappy. Either that or the two previous to those spoiled me.

I should have pointed out that it was the other story that was linked here where they said it was only the second show ever to come back from the dead. They said,

"This is only the second time in television history that a show sent to TV's trash heap has been resurrected."

I stopped watching the Doctor half way through the last episode. If you saw the show you will know why I stopped. If I wanted to puke I would have stuck my fingers down my throat.

Still I had thought they ruined the whole Doctor Who image long before that last episode. The plots are so cheesy and simple that it's an insult to the old shows. It's all flash and attitude now. The old shows were about intricate plots and imagination. They didn't need special effects to get their point across. They didn't think being sadistic was a good thing either. The Doctor didn't go around bragging about how great he was and how stupid everyone else was. Considering how pathetically simple and one dimensional the plots are in the new series the new Doctor doesn't have much to brag about IMO.

Maybe you guys are just too young to remember the original shows. They were MUCH better than the new ones. BTW I will stop hijacking this thread at this point.

I watched the old shows as a kid. Over all I like the new shows but I do agree they need more shows that have an indepth plot. Basicly a 2 parters should be the norm not the excpetion.

I really thought the whole SatanPit thing felt much more Who like in the way the plot unfolded then alot of this season and when I looked at the writing credit it wasn't even one I recognised.

The new Doctor Who is a lot like Smallville. Every episode is a unique story, but there is a constant thread, an underlying plot to the whole season. Very few shows do that.

    From Roswell that Ends Well:

Truman: "Are you here to create some sort of human/alien hybrid?"
Zoidberg: "Are you coming on to me?"
