You made this into a Poll. LOL!

I voted for 7, but I was taught with Austrialia instead of Oceania.

Antarctica, South America, North America, Europe, Asia, Africa, & Australia.

In fact, I never even heard of Oceania before this discussion.

NA SA AF AS EU ANT AUS. but if i remember correctly that differs from what EU schools teach. if i remember correctly they are taught that north and south America are one land mass or continent. and we here in the states are taught that north and south are seprate.. by the way i dont ever recal central America being classified as a continent. and OC? never heard of that.

i voted 7 thinking that OC was AUS .

  4. From Wikipedia:

Oceania is a geographical, often geopolitical, region consisting of numerous lands – mostly islands but often including Australia – in the Pacific Ocean and vicinity. The exact scope of Oceania is defined variously, with interpretations including Australia, New Zealand, the eastern parts of Indonesia, East Timor, and Papua New Guinea.
It's supposed to be Soccerooland + the surroundind Islands, so it counts as Australia. (At least for the poll options)

If you state that N America and S America are one continent, then you must also state that Europe and Asia are also one continent. I went with 7 continents. N America, S America, Africa, Europe, Asia, Australia (Oceania?), and Antarctica.

It isn't my personal opinion or my own statement. I'm simply mentioning what I was taught.
Why the educational system in South America teaches that America is one, maybe political reasons, religious reasons, who knows?.
The question for this poll is: What were you taught by your school?, it doesn't have anything to do with your point of view today.

My point of view today is that once we receive the first alien visitor, all the labels that we define as "countries" will dissapear and we will all be EARTH people from that day on.

LONG LIVE THE FEDERATION!!!!... LIVE LONG AND PROSPER!!!

Jokes aside, we should be worrying about being one world, instead of NO, I'm NOT from here, I'm from THERE.... like it matters.
If you're full of sh*t, you will still be full of sh*t it doesn't matter where you come from.
And the opposite, if you are a good person, it doesn't matter where you come from, you are still a good person.

    7 seas, 7 continents
Antartica; North America; South America; Europe; Asia; Africa; Australia.
What I don't get is how Australia can be a continent but Greenland isn't?

Antartica, N. America, S. America, Europe, Asia, Africa and Australia

Although, even early on in my Gary, Indiana, Public School education we were taught that there were some differing opinions. Eurasia was the one that was always "iffy" and some teachers even mentioned that other cultures had different ideas about the Americas and India and so on. I remember class assignments of defining how we thought the continents should be devided by tracing maps or pointing things out on a globe, but I think that these exercises were pretty much designed to help reinforce the seven above concept (the Eurasia example was always the exception)

I remember being told at a very young age that the seven continents definition that we learned about was like the newest and most up to date version and that this was what we would be tested on and these where the only accecpted answers for our test.

Apparently this controversy has been going on for a long time

  15. Oceania is not a continent, it is the area containing the Pacific Ocean islands. Australia is part of Asia in this respect, as in Australiasia. Ask someone with a degree in geological cartography - it is a common misunderstanding.

it is still open for debate - as people with a degree in geological cartography do classify it as thus and some do not ....
it is really a macrogeographical region

Can I have an O Pat and Vanna????

Yeah I go with 7 like everyone else.

As for Greenland I don't think its large enough to count on its own. Australia is clearly large enough to be its own land mass.

Islands are part of plates, but are not necessarily part of a continent. Not every plate is a continent. For example, somewhere like Hawaii is not part of any continent.

I'm with the smurf on this one. Of course, those were less politically correct times, when we didn't care if someone got left out. It would not surprise me to find out that Oceania was being called a continent just to be inclusive of land masses too small to make the grade. After all, earth gravity is now 10 m/s and not 9.8 m/s because modern students are too stupid to work with fractions (and what can .2 really mean anyway - oh that's right, a $4.5 billion Mars mission down the crapper because all the numbers were rounded to make it easier to calculate), and it is apparently wrong to let people feel stupid (or ask them to actually learn and retain knowledge)
