Some of the things I have been capturing from VHS to the PC and then burning to DVD were recorded on old mono cheap VCRs and as such isnt the greatest quality.

Now I totally understand that the garbage in garbage out concept is in full force here and I dont expect miracles.

I was just wondering, as I often read these boards and come across filters that do some amazing stuff (stabalise shaky video, cartoonise video) and I was wondering is there anything that you normally use to clean up crappy VHS sources?

When I say clean up i mean....there is sort of a fuzz in some of my videos, i looks a little unclean (hard to describe).

I know when I scan a photo there is an option that can remove scratches and somehow it knows what to get rid of and imperfections are gone from the photo when I scan.

Im just wondering if there is something for video or a recomended filter that people use that I dont know of?

Its not a must have thing...I am happy to preserve my vhs tapes as they are, would just like to know if there is something im missing out on.

I like convolution3d, an avisynth plugin, for VHS work. Too much and looks unnatural, but the right amount can remove a lot of noise. It depends on exactly what your problems are though. Can you post some screen shots ?

MSU has a couple of nice virtualdub filters for restoring colour to old tapes and fixing other problems. They tend to be pretty slow to run though.

Post some screen shots showing your problems, and you will get better, more specific answers.
