  1. Hello!

Is there anything on the Mac i can use to extract the audio from a non standard VCD mpg/DAT file so i can re encode it properly? I've done this with VirtualDub in VPC, but I would prefer to do it in the Mac?

    Thanks

  2. to extract audio from a MPG you could use the mpgtx package available for OS9 and OSX at http://www.biermann.org/philipp/mpegcut/

install the latest version, put your MPG in the same directory, run and type mpgdemux movie.mpg which will chunk your MPG file into a .mp2 sound file and a .m1v video file

  3. hello!

Great. Thanks. Do you know of any program on thr mac that will display the video and audio format, codec, etc used in a video?

My problem has been downloading video in various formats to convert to VCD. In most cases a quick run through VCDgear makes them Toast ready. But i think the last couple VCD mpg i downloaded have non standard audio. A different type of compression that toast doesn't like.

If it's just a mater of splitting the audio from the video, converting the audio and re-encoding that is easy. I'd rather not have to recompress the video stream if the trouble is only audio format.

    Thanks

  4. to analyze a MPG file you can use that very same mpgtx package, the command is mpgtx -i movie.mpg

if you are on OSX a GUI port of the same software is also available at
    http://www.sbpr.a.se/systemjammers/mpeginfo/index.html

    VCD compliant streams must be system streams of 1150 kbit/sec MPEG-1 for video (352 x 288 pixels @ 25 frames/second or 352 x 240 pixels @ 29,97 frames/second) and 224 kbit/sec stereo MPEG-1 Layer2 for audio.
