  1. My problem is i just reinstalled windows xp with sp2 on my computer. i didnt change and hardware just wanted a fresh os. now im am having problems connecting to web sites and the ones that do connect take a long time to load like 5 to 10 minutes and it wont connect to any peers in bitcomet. does anyone have any ideas why this is happening? i have downloaded and installed all xp updates, i also ran spyware doctor, adaware, and spybot, i also installed and used norton antivirus 2006, i installed all mb drivers, video drivers, and so on. i have a dsl connection with a dlink di-524 router with a wired connection. im using firefox, as i was before, for a browser. like i said before everything worked well before i even used the same xp disc as i have other times could it be a bad install or what? or has anyone heard of norton slowing down an internet connection or slowing programs loading? my system is an AMD64 3000+ with 1gb ram on an abit nf8 mobo.
Thanks for your time and help.

Yes, Norton slows a lot of stuff down.

First and foremost, make sure you don't have two or more firewalls running. Disable Windows' built-in firewall if you're running Norton's. Norton's script blocking, and even some of the other features, will also slow down your connection if Firefox is configured to use them. Make sure your proxy settings are set for a direct internet connection (no proxy). Try also rebooting your router just to be on the safe side.

    Could it be a driver?

  4. Norton scans everything, so that could be your reason.
Believing yourself to be secure only takes one cracker to dispel your belief.

Order of operations might help. You mentioned you downloaded XP updates. I'm assuming you used Windows Update. How was that? Any problems, slow download, problem connecting to Windows Update? If that worked, then your problem lies in what you did AFTER the updates.

So what exactly did you install/enable after the XP Updates?

    That would be your culprit.

1: All internet user's are at the mercy of their service provider's whim's .

They won't tell you when there having service problem's ... it's up to you to figure this out .

2: Almost all p2p service's require a specific port setup as to enable passing through firewall without interferance ... check firewall setup .

3: Norton's av is a blight ... consider avgfree ... out run's norton ... avg has very small memory footprint on system .

    4: Xp update's are for guinea pig's ... never fully tested .

5: Disabling xp's native firewall is not the way to do thing's ... if running any other firewall product ... disable that , and try those website's ...

Some website's will say " I see you , but address unknown ... good luck in downloading this file mate ... cause I have no idea where to send it ??? " .... dual firewall issue .

5: Website popularity ... maximum bandwidth exceeded so service is temporarily on hold ... and many other popular excuse's .

6: Yes , there is a possibilty of faulty reinstall of os ... they do happen ... very rare 2 system's react the same .

7: Modem / router and cable issue ... any heat problem's can cause havoc with router's .

Another 20 odd thing's could be listed , but aim at clearing these that have been listed should clearup the problem .

uninstall NORTON's altogether and download AVAST & AVG ANTIVIRUS programs that are freeware. I used to be a NORTON user but decided not to use it when it failed to find many viruses that AVG would find. Use ZONE ALARM for your firewall which is also freeware. just my 2 cents!

Fast internet conenction & system speed in 2 easy steps.

1- Get NOD32 (I reccomend this other then any AV software because it is the greatest state-of-the-art AV software ib this universe)

2- Goto www.speedguide.net & download the DSL speedoptimizer tool which will eable you to configure your registry settings regarding anything related to your system. Load the program
    - Select optimal settings from the right bottom option button. Nearly in the middle there is a text box marked as mtu, change this to 1500 or more (1500 is max actually). Now select advanced tab.
And set Max connectionsper sever to 200 or more regarding your in ternet connection also change the Maxconnectionsper1_0 server to the same.

Thats all. SPEED! SPEED! SPEED! & NO slowing down. NO adwares, viruses, trojans etc nothing

IIRC, Bitcomet contains spyware. One of those is NEW.NET, which is an LSP hijacker. Try getting the uninstaller from new.net (you cannot uninstall it unless you really know what you are doing, else it'll break your protocol stack.) Spyware rarely travels alone so it could be other things as well. For legal reasons, not all anti-spyware proggies detect NEW.NET as well as some other nasties. Perhaps that's causing the problem.

As for turning off Norton's firewall, I believe the best approach is to uninstall it. You have a router, and you can use just about any firewall product to provide outbound protection. I would not, however, have no firewall.

  11. There is a program called Tune Up Utilities, shareware, that can detect & correct your settings, I guess.
