XP runs CHKDSK on one of my data drives each time the system boots. Its fairly quick and verifies files, indices and security descriptors. Each time, it indicates the disk is OK. No showstopper but kind of annoying. Anyway to eliminate this short of re-formatting the drive and re-copying the data back onto the drive? Thanks in advance.

  2. Are you running Norton Antivirus? I had a similar sitaution and when I switched programs, this solved the problem.

I don't use Norton. Out of 8 logical partitions, this is the only 1. I recently recovered from a corrupted partition table on that drive, so I suspect that has something to do with it.

  5. How big are the partitions and what filing system are you using?

The one with the problem (one of my removable backup drives) has only a single partition on the drive. I'm using NTFS.

If I were you, I would backup the data, delete the partition and then recreate and format. Then restore the data.

Have you done a surface scan (as opposed to just the quick scandisk)?

    you can't....

this happened to me recently. I deleted some files on the drive that I thought are corrupted and now it's fine.
I upgraded the drive, I did a hdd to hdd image copy, and since then that happened, so I don't know for sure if it's the drive copy or just bad files the problem.

if possible try to locate bad files, that could be the problem, just some corupted files on the drive.

Odd question - have ou been shutting down properly and fully?

BTW, you should be able to eliminate chkdsk with MSCONFIG.

Problem solved--I think. Deleted the partition, created a new one, and re-copied all of the files. Re-booted and no CHKDSK. Again, thanks for all of the replies.
