  1. Hello, i'm new to this forum.
I have a question about dvd burning and playback.
When I burn a DVD-R disk on my Mac using toast 7, my dell pc (fairly new) at work doesn't recognize it. If I burn the same media to a DVD+R disk (on my Mac of course) the dell plays it fine.
If my son burns a DVD-R disk on his pc (Dell) using nero I believe. It plays fine in my Dell.

    Why won't it recognize my DVD-R ?

    My Mac is a 400mhz. PCI-Graphics G-4 OSX 10.4.6

Unfortunately, the +R/-R bug bites almost everyone. The best advice is to test a bunch of different media brands and types and see which one(s) work best for your situation.

Just wait until you burn DVD videos and see how many will or won't play in your set-top DVD player (or your Uncle Charlie's or your friend Dave's).

    Welcome to the Zoo.

  3. That doesn't explain why DVD-R will play on a pc when burned on another pc but not when burned on a mac.

Without meaning to sound flip, it's different because it's different. There is no consistency from one brand or model of burner to another. A specific example:

My G5 (with a Pioneer DVR-109) burned Ritek +R media perfectly but Verbatim -R discs were just miserable performers.

My new Intel iMac (with a Matshita UJ-846) chokes on burning Ritek +R and Memorex DL+R media yet those Verbatim -R discs work great. Go figure.

You obviously want a specific recommendation to resolve the issue now. Wait a few days and see how many suggestions you'll get in this thread. Then breathe deep and chant "Om". This is a Zen issue. 8)

What burning formats are being used? Toast; Mac Only, Mac & PC, DVD-ROM (UDF), or ISO 9660? I Share discs with a Dell and the DVD-ROM (UDF) format works fine for us for Data and Video discs. I would suggest checking out what format you son is using in Nero and try to use the same. You never did say what type of disc you're burning, Data, Video, whatever...

  6. I'm burning video using "DVD-video from Video-TS folder" in toast . The same happens if I burn data to a dvd-r disk using "mac & pc" . The dell does not see the disk in any case.

You can also ask this question at the Toast 7 forum. With luck, one of the tech support folks at Roxio will answer.

So you're burning a VIDEO_TS folder with VOB's, IFO,'s, etc. already in that folder? This is intended for a standalone DVD player.

I've had DVD Data discs burnt as Mac & PC not work in a PC. That's why I burn DVDs as DVD-ROM (UDF).
DVD-video from Video-TS folder, is basically the same as DVD-ROM (UDF). You might try burning the Video disc as DVD-ROM (UDF), it's not much harder to setup. But really, if the Video DVDs you're making work fine in standalone DVD players....but not the Dell, I'd tell the Dell owner to call Mr. Dell... 8)

  10. Unfortunately none of the other toast options offer auto-compression.
Forgot to mention I'm using 4.7g disks.
You make an excellent point though. I should be checking dell.com
    and Roxio.

    Thanks all .
