Hi , i have question, i dl some music video, firstly window was showing it as dat file and wasn't playing , i open with media player, it does open but never change format properly.

I am attaching the screeshoot, for more info, there are two files one which open and showing in right format (i.e. media player), the second is which i was talking about, dat file. why it is dat file? why not like other normal format file? why isn't it showing right format like media player or other? how could i change it.

The file "" is dot file and still not showing right format.

Could any one please tell me , what is the problem? I will be thankful.

Dat files could be derived from a VCD.

Maybe try GSpot on the DAT file to see what the specs are ?

Alternatively, load into Virtualdub and go to File > File Information.
    If in doubt, Google it.

If the source file was originally a part of a VCD, then the process of authoring VCD "converts" VCD-compliant MPEG-1 into .DAT files.

To extract as an MPEG file, try VCDGear and do the DAT -> MPG extraction type.

Virtualdub is primarily a "simple" editor - I say simple because it does not provide advanced transitions, video overlays or anything like that, but that said, it is arguably the best freeware editor I've seen. Basic file manipulation and/or filtering is fine. Primarily used directly for outputting to AVI, it can output to MPEG by using YMPEG as a codec or alternatively by frameserving to your favorite MPEG encoder.
    If in doubt, Google it.

the .bc! is most likey a torrent that didn't download fully/correctly. as you can see it's 0 kb in size. there is probably nothing there.

    Spot on.

BitComet if I'm not mistaken does this for incomplete files (there's a tickbox in the settings that says "create bc! files for incomplete downloads" IIRC.
    If in doubt, Google it.

codec packs are BAD! BAD! BAD!

They often cause more system havoc than anything. Only install individual codecs you need, on an as needed basis. Some people use FFDshow, which is a set of filters that can decode the most common stuff (and probably other things as well), but finding a good stable build that works well can sometimes be difficult, at least in my experience.

You could give it a shot. If it doesnt work, just uninstall it, simple as that.
