  1. Ok...
so now that blu-ray and hd-dvd's are upon us, what is the status of backing up discs produced in these formats?

Also... now that we've got new video formats... do we get new video forums?
even if there's not much to discuss yet

Currently at the moment, there are no tools that can decrypt HD-DVD as it stands.

    Soon.

Sure, most H'wood movies would be encrypted, but some might not. Plus, there should soon be Home HD/BD recorders, which likely wouldn't be encrypted.

Not only should there be a way to copy them (prob. just drag-n-drop, Nero, etc), but also a way to author, decompose, reauthor them.

Once people are more familiar with all the elements of the spec, there will probably be people here who'll go for making an app that'll do just those things.

    In time.

Buy BlueRay or HD-DVD and you're sleeping with the enemy.

Blu-Ray and HD probably won't last as long on the marketplace as DVD, and that's really only been about 5 years, for all intents and purposes. HVD is already out and new versions promise 1Tb per disc. So if you go with Blu-RayHD you'll re-purchase your movie collection in BD or HD and then re-purchase it yet again in 4 years on HVD. And unlike BD/HD, HVD players probably won't support current DVD.

That would be market suicide. Why wouldn't they be backwards compatible? If it can hold a dvd disc its not that hard to include mpeg decoding information. Its pretty basic for players to include the older technology. I'd be suprised if any disc based medium that is the size of a dvd would not be able to play a dvd. Thats the way the market has been and I don't see that changing any time soon. Just my opinion on that.
Donatello - The Shredder? Michelangelo - Maybe all that hardware is for making coleslaw?

The hardware and laser are different. While it's not impossible to support both, I don't see a reason why they would from a marketing standpoint: The whole idea is to force people to upgrade. The only function of backwards compatibility is to allow people to migrate to newer standards; otherwise, it's rather counterproductive for manufacturers and entertainment companies to support old technology when their goal is to sell you an entirely new one. By the time HVD rolls around, the only support those players will need is BD/HD; DVD will be a generation too old. We're already seeing most BD/HD players and recorders not supporting CD (the digital predecessor to DVD). In 4-5 years most people will have upgraded to BD/HD, whether they wanted to or not, so there is no point in supporting DVD, and any DVD holdouts will eventually be forced to upgrade.
