    off air?

    See the list at AVS
    or this list

since you have no requirements other than manual recording, you have many many choices.

  3. Thank you...that should get me started.

I will be using with a satelite system, not any mainstream dish companies, so I doubt tivo or whomever would be available...I don't even know how tivo works.

The satelite I will be using is for home school, where classes are broadcast via satelite, then I need to record (DVR) and show to my kids.

Are all the DVRs, DVD recorders too? or can I get just a DVR and put the extra $ into a large HD?

Also, regarding quality, what we be an average quality people use for recording and how much time per GB does this come out to.

    Thanks for any additional help.

What is the model number of the receiver -- or -- what outputs are on the receiver?
Is the signal normal SD or HD? Making it work for HD quickly narrows the field.

    YPbPr?
    S-Video?
Composite NTSC? Or is this PAL?

    Automatic recording isn't an issue?

  5. I don't have the received yet...I can guess as to it being just a standard recieved with nothing more than s-video, ntsc, iwth regular rca-type video and audio jacks too.

This is just for home school, no movies, so it's basically classes taught via satellite.

I don't know if I need automatic recording, because it seems like with autorecord like tivo or replay, you pay $20/month...so the first year will cost $240., then the second year, $240., for a total of $480 for two years...and that's just a DVR, no DVD recording.

Where can't I get a DVR for around $300 (HDD and DVD), then I have it for 3 years (if it works that long)...but I have to manually do everything...right, but at least I get DVD recording out of it too?

Why wouldn't a DVD recorder with hard disk work for you?

It has scheduled recording similar to a VCR.
