I am wondering if the disk that I burned with Disk Utility is region free or did it automatically burn in the region that my Matshita DVD drive plays. Here is what I did: I recorded video from my VHS player directly to a cyberhome DVD recorder. Then I put the DVD in my mini and saved the Video_TS file to my external drive. Then I combined an img made with iDVD with the Video_TS file I just saved, sent it through ffmpegx and created a new img. Then I burned to DVD with disk utility. Is the DVD region 1 or region free? I assume region 1 but clarification would be great. If it is region 1, what would be the easiest way to burn a region free disk and what software should I use? I have a variety of programs installed on my computer that I have never used such as: mac the ripper, mpeg streamclip etc. and I don't have Toast or Popcorn.

Disk Utility has no ability to add region codes to discs. It is region free. Note also that Disk Utility will not format a DVD in UDF format required for video DVD, so if you had tried to burn a VIDEO_TS folder with Disk Utility it wouldn't play in a DVD Player. You apparently know that which is why you had ffmpegx create a disc image file instead. There is a freeware application called DVD Imager which also creates UDF-formatted disc image files for burning with Disk Utility.

Since you have a standalone recorder you might consider getting Toast 7. It can extract MPEGs from video-mode and VR-mode DVDs created by standalone recorders and then re-author (along with other content) to new DVDs. I do this all the time now with VR-mode DVD-R's recorded on my Pioneer standalone recorder.
