Currently part way through developing an OS X application based around Quicktime. For some reason when Xvid files are encoded at 480x360 parts of the video appears corrupt when playing in Quicktime player. (Tiger, QT 7.1.1)
Here are two Xvid encoded AVI files, encoded identically except for the fact that one is 512x384 and the other is 480x360
512x384
480x360
The 512x384 file plays perfectly in quicktime 7.1.1, the 480x360 file displays this problem:
I've tried all kind of codecs, 3ivX, DivX, Xvid component etc etc. All display the problem. The only one that doesn't is FFusion but using this means MP3 is muted.
VLC, Mplayer will play the 480x360 file fine. I'm totally clueless as to why the resolution of 480x360 is causing such problems in quicktime??
If anyone is willing to try and figure this out I'm willing to give that person an ePassporte gift account with $70 loaded on to spend online anywhere that accepts a VISA card.
You must get the 480x360.avi file playing in quicktime player with sound and without the video corruption issue as displayed above.
Any help is much appreciated.

The height of the 480x360 video isn't divisible by 16. I think xvid and mpeg4 codecs in general need everything in nice&neat 16pixel blocks. Some players and encoders might not care if something is non-standad. Quicktime cares.
Just a semi-educated guess, not scientific fact. I guess it doesn't really help your situation though. -

I can only save that video as MOV, and I know a MOV wasn't made with two Audio tracks and a Subtitle track. So we're not to change the video, but somehow get QT to play something with two Audio tracks...in a MOV container.....right
OK, I did the option click thingy, it's now an AVI...
Yep that cleared it up, one basic run through ffmpegX at 480x352. I can hear it now... But I want to round it off to 360, I don't care about standards..... -
