  1. Hi, I'm a newbie and I have tried my best to look at the FAQs and tutorials. There is so much info out there, it's almost overkill, I'm overwhelmed. I only have a few simple questions. In order to get an avi to play on my standalone DVD player, I understand I have to convert it, but to what? DVD, VCD, or SVCD? How do I know which to convert it to? I've been doing my best to learn, but I'm tired of wasting blank DVD's. So far I can get video but no audio. I just want to know what format to convert the AVI to, and how to get it to play on a DVD player, not just on my computer. Any help would be SO SO appreciated. Thanks.

If you have a Divx certified player, you may be able to play it as is. Otherwise you will have to convert it to a compliant speification. See What is DVD (top left corner) for more details on the DVD specification.

The simplest, most reliable tool is ConvertXtoDVD, which has a freeware sibling called DivxtoDVD. This will take one or more avi files and create a DVD format structure ready for burning. ConvertXtoDVD will also burn the DVD for you once done.

Don't use Nero - crappy mpeg2 encoder and not a great burner for DVD video.

Pinnacle is overkill for avi conversion unless you need to edit first.

You can do all of this free.

    Divxtodvd
    avi2dvd
    Diko
    The Film Machine

    All free

  6. I tried the DivXtoDVD and it converted it and burnt it, and seemed to work fine, but when I put the DVD into my DVD player, it just sat on "Loading Disc" for like 5 mins, then said "No disc" and stopped. Why is it doing this??

This sounds like it might be a media problem or a firmware problem on your DVD burner. Do you know what make your burner is? Make sure you are running the latest firmware.

Try DVDR + if you had used a - Disc, and vice versa.

"DVDworkshop 2" by Ulead software is a good one stop application for converting
.AVI files into the proper file structure, with .VOB and IFO files, that will play on most
normal (TV connected) stand-alone DVD players. It's also useful for creating cool menus,
and has the disc burning software integrated into the application, so you don't have to
use an other application, like Nero or Roxio to actually burn the disc, but it's a little bit
expensive. I've seen a "Student" edition (still full version) for about $170.

What are you trying to convert.... captured camcorder footage?

  10. I'm just trying to get some AVIs that I downloaded off the net to burn and play on my living room tv and dvd player. My DVDs are DVD+R, and my living room DVD player is made by Apex. Why should I need another program if ConvertXtoDVD should do it all?

  11. Oh and my DVD burner is brand new. My whole computer is brand new, it's made by HP. My DVD burner says it's a DVD+-RW Double Layer 16x.

Strange. Try a different program, maybe AVI2DVD. Sometimes you have to pick one.

Next time try DVD-R's. Who knows...

  13. Brand and number of different types of blank media tried?

    Model number of Apex player?

Have you looked in the DVD players list to see what media type, plus and/or minus, your player supports?

Does the converted disk play in the PC?

Is it recognized as a DVD by DVD player software?

Best guess is cheap crap media. This guess is based on the extremely limited information provided so far.

  14. DVD's used are Memorex DVD+R blanks, 8x, 4.7 gigs, 120 mins. Once burned, my computer DVD player recognized it and played it fine. My Apex DVD player in my living room is model# AD1110W.

  15. Ah, some useful information.

I looked up the player in the DVD Players database. Player is listed as playing both plus and minus formats, as well as most Memorex blanks. Very informative to note the number of different manufacturers which have supplied "Memorex" blanks. At least one of these is reported to have failed to play.

Get some RW disks to experiment with.

Get some different brand names to experiment with.

What procedure did you use that produced video but no audio? If you got that far, you are most of the way there. Are you familiar with audio frequency requirements for DVD, acceptable audio formats, and the common issue with VBR audio encoding frequently found in downloaded files? Are you aware of the highly variable nature of downloaded files, the significant percentage which are either slightly or completely corrupted, the possible number of different codecs used, etc?

Your question is about as simple as asking how to create a good meal for 6 unexpected guests in 30 minutes or less, using only what items I have on hand. Note that even starting to answer this question would be to ask just exactly what it is that I already have on hand. To make the analogy a little more similar, I want to feed these 6 people with what I can pull out of neighborhood garbage cans in the next 10 minutes.

Almost everyone who bought this cheap junk player says it won't play anything but store bought DVDs and it won't even play those for some folks. Tech support says it will only play DVD-R, not DVD+R but most users say it won't play either.

Do yourself a favor and buy a DivX player and just burn your downloaded DivX and XviD files to CD or burn them as Data DVDs to whatever cheap DVD media you want. No need to convert them to anything or waste money on good media to make it work. Save your good DVD media for DVD back-ups.

Without telling us what media you used, what's your DVD player, what's your sister's DVD player, and other details? I'm afraid we're not psychic...

    I can tell.

It's best to start a new thread which states your specific problem rather than trying to resurrect an old thread that is only generally related, you'll get better responses that way. Also, please give as much detail as possible including model numbers. Cyberhome and Maganavox make many different units.
