I'm not sure if Suse uses Yum or Apt (or both) with your version, but i'd recommend you use mplayer-mencoder or Avidemux for xvid encoding. If you're not familar with compiling software, check Suse forums for setting up additional repos that may have RPM's/APT packages.

    Hope this help.

Most SuSE users use the Pacmkan web site to get rpms. For example:
    xvid - http://packman.links2linux.org/index.php4?action=172&vn=14
    xvid4conf - http://packman.links2linux.org/index.php4?action=408&vn=13
There are MANY other compiled rpms (codecs, players, encoders, etc .... ) for SuSE, on the Packman site. I recommend you explore the site and determine what is available.

  4. I used the rpm things. I can only install it from konqurer though. Somethings wrong with YAST in the OS. Anyone know how to fix it? WHat are some good books on programming in Unix? Do they use C or C++? I want to learn to make my own apps.
