  2. What DVD burner do you have?

If you are unsure, do the following:

    - Hold down the Windows key and press "Pause/Break"
    - Click on the "Hardware" tab
    - Click the "Devide Manager" button
    - Click the "+" icon by "DVD/CD-ROM drives"

You should now be able to tell/confirm what the DVD drive is. I'm not sure what the problem is, but it may be common to your particular drive which is why I ask.

Try unloading and reloading the device driver.

  5. Did this happen when you bought new discs? They may not be compatible with your drive.

All discs do not work in all drives. The older the drive the more likely this will happen.

  6. What error are you receiving?

Could it be you're using DVD-R instead of DVD+R?

I have the same model DVD burner on a Win98SE PC. When I got it, it was DVD+R ONLY. Determining mine was made by Cyberdrive, I downloaded a firmware upgrade (150B) that claimed to add DVD-R capability (http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=1746).

Before the upgrade, Nero id'd the drive as +R only; afterwards, both + and -R. HOWEVER, my burner is iffy AT BEST at knowing what to do with -R media, so I limit its use to +R. It's also very iffy on DVD-R playback; some will, some won't, which may be differences in media.

Inserting a blank DVD+R, Windows Explorer id's the disc as "CD ROM" with zero capacity and zero files (i.e., blank).

Inserting a blank DVD-R, Windows Explorer id's the disc as "Audio CD" with a 1.99GB capacity.

I also have this mis-identification (CD vs. DVD) on another machine (also Win98SE) that is a D/L rebadged Sony burner, but it seems to be related to a conflict with Nero 6.6x.

Are you having this problem BEFORE you start Nero?

The reason I ask: Many times, AFTER I burn a DVDR (+ or -), with Nero Smartstart running in the background, if I open Windows Explorer, it ID's the newly burned DVD as a CD/R in my system.

Exiting Nero completely (i.e., out of Smartstart, too) usually fixes this problem. Sometimes I also need to eject the disc and re-insert it. It's almost as if Smartstart confuses Windows Explorer's evaluation of what type disc is in the drive.

    Hope this helps.
