Why do you need to do this (if you don't mind my asking)? What kind of AVI file is it, and what are you aiming for?

It's just that you could potentially just work with/use the original AVI file and save time and quality loss.

I was told all computers can play quicktime files. The avi file I have uses divx codec. And I'm putting my videofiles on cd so I don't want the audience to have to download the codec inorder to play it

They can play quicktime if they have quicktime installed. It is not part of windows.

Mpeg1 is probably the most universal format if you want to cover every platform. Second would be wmv, simply because windows covers most of the globe, however it wont play nearly was well outside the windows world. Quicktime is Apple's format, and will play on all apple machines, but only on other platforms if the user has installed the player software.

  6. I'm afraid that you were misled. You need either QuickTime, QuickTime Alternative or another suitable codec installed to play back QuickTime files.

How long is the file? If you want ultimate compatibility, MPEG-1 is your best bet.
