I noticed a few other post here reporting similiar problems. Can you please give me some advice?
I have a Philips DVDR80 that is outside its warranty (surprise!) and is now causing me problems. The recorder worked great for ages until it now randomly gives a "DISC ERR" when recording and also gives jerky playback on commercial DVDs when it has an 'off' day.
Why is this happening? Will upgrading the firmware help?
Any advice would be much appreciated,
Thanks.

Wow....an 80.
I'm surprised it is still working at all...
In all fairness....my even older DVDR985 is still going strong. I did have one "bout" of disc error problems which was fixed with a/the firmware upgrade. I kept the CD with the firmware upgrade if you cannot find the upgrade. I believe the upgrade that I have is the "all models" upgrade....which is why I kept it. It was only available for a short time than it was broken up into individual upgrades.
The recorder is old(er) and broken....run the upgrade....what can it do....break it more?

Good shout.
I have found the latest firmware on the Philips main web site so I will give that a go and see what turns up - as you say, nothing to lose.
Thanks.
