I am in the early stages of video management. Right now all I want to do it crop and split some videos that I have captured over the years. There are usually multiple videos on one DV tape so I capture the entire tape and go back and edit later. Now I'm getting to the editing part. I really just want to crop and split them at this time. They will be primarily viewed on the computer so right now I just leave them as raw DV because it is the best quality. I use WinDV to capture because it is the easiest. Is there a simple tool out there that I could easily and quickly crop movies with and still export it to DV?

I imagine virtualdub will let you output to dv. It can cut and join. (freeware). Also I believe windows movie maker lets you output to dv (xp only).

    Hi kman22,

VirtualDub is free and will do what you want it to. Open your AVI in VirtualDub to work with it.

Any "manipulation" is done by the use of filters: Click Video -> Filters... and choose the ones you need.

To output back to DV AVI, download and install the Panasonic DV Codec (if you haven't got it already) - it too is free and works well with VirtualDub. To use this when exporting, click Video -> Compression and choose it from the list of different codecs.

    Good luck.
There is some corner of a foreign field that is forever England: Telstra Stadium, Sydney, 22/11/2003.
