tmpg with XP ???? doesn't work...

i'm trying to convert .avi to .mpeg to read it on my dvd player
but it only converts mpeg files to mpeg files in another size.
it doesn't work with .avi files...
would someone know how to make it work???
msg is " can not open or unsupported

you just need some codecs get the crystal codec pack or the other pack i forget the name of it just now from the tools section
