Are they commercial (movie/video) DVDs? Are the discs completely clean on the underside (no fingerprints - and as mentioned above, no dirt and scratches)?
Also, if you try the discs in a friend's DVD player or PC DVD drive, do they play (without the problems you're experiencing)? If cameras add ten pounds, why would people want to eat them? -
Are they DVDs you bought recently or have you had them for quite some time.
Where were they purchased from; from a store like HMV, or from ebay, etc...
What titles are the DVDs.
Some answers may be able to explain why the dvds do not play correctly. -
Late last year one of our chains had a big DVD sale. They had tons of copies of a dozen of so titles going really cheap. I picked up a couple - Rollerball (original) and Sum of all Fears (don't know why).
Rollerball froze about 15 minutes from the end, so I took it back and exchanged it for a new copy. It froze in exactly the same place. Third copy - ditto. In the end I just got a refund and moved on. Later I watched SOAF and it stuttered badly at one point.
Long story short - manufacturing faults can screw a whole batch. Sad thing is, these people never took them off the shelf. Just kept selling them until they were gone - and I guess paid up on a few returns along the way.Read my blog here.

Did they play in the past and now they don't?
Have they ever not froze?
There is damage that is almost invisible to the eye which can cause palyback problems.

Those $1 DVDs at Walmart freeze up easily. Especially those Woody Woodpecker ones. And the quality sucks worse than VHS.

To summarise:
16 posts later and all we know is that they're "bargain" DVDs from Walmart, and they exhibit the same behaviour across multiple DVD players and PCs.
Fair chance it's the discs IMHO - either foreign substances such as grease off last night's pizza and/or fingerprints or possibly the discs were pressed to cheap shit media.
Can you rip the disc(s) fully in your PC ?If in doubt, Google it. -
