I'm looking for some small app that will allow checking audio levels in MPEG2 file. There's a variety of video players but I don't know which one will do the job... All I need to do is to check for audio balance and get quick and rough levels estimation. No sound or video editors please... Something like Winamp but with better audio graph display: VU meters... something with L and R audio bars. Any ideas?

You can also get a ton of different VU meter plugins for WinAmp.

In the meantime I had to settle for Vegas VU meters (while cancelling peak scan, makes things much faster). Following your suggestion I got Winamp VU meter's (called "peak") with peak holder. That's roughly what I needed, thanks for suggestions.

If you are spending money, try Sound Forge, even the consumer version.

http://www.winamp.com/plugins/details.php?id=41743 There's also this one, reminiscent of an audio cassette recorder.

I've had some intermittent left channel issues while moving stuff from PVR to my pc via DVD Xpress. Not critical stuff but I needed to quickly check which clips were affected (seemed cabling related and already resolved). Loading about 20 hr of MPEG's into an editor just to check audio levels seemed like an overkill. Thanks for suggestions.
Love those analog VU meters! ...remind me of an old Akai reel to reel I still own (just like this one: http://cgi.ebay.com/BRAND-NEW-AKAI-GX-4000D-Reel-to-Reel-Tape-Recorder_W0QQitemZ973571...QQcmdZViewItem )

Here are some audio level meters.

The program writer's homepage is here.....

    http://www.darkwood.demon.co.uk/index.htm

Here is a direct link to his meters.....

    http://www.darkwood.demon.co.uk/PC/meter.html

If you use his meters you'll have to right-click on the
program to bring up the menu. They can be 'always-on-top',
    show 'peak level', etc.
A man walked into his son's room and said..."Son, that will cause blindness."
The boy said, "Dad, I'm over here."
