Seems my small but cheap ($30/year) web host sold to another larger company. Since the very shaky transition (down time was involved) I no longer get any resposes to my support emails.

Anyone know a good ultra cheap host?

Their basic plan doesn't even come with PhpMyAdmin access so they are a no go. Thanks for the suggestion though.

I never had the fortune to enlist with any "ultra cheap" hosts. Though three times what you were paying I've been using PowWeb's hosting services for about six years now. They have a lot of features for the cost.

Actually at $30 a year they had everything I needed. Never once have I gone over quota and if anything I could have used a few more megs of space.

I want to keep it cheap, guess I'll just google around for budget host.

I've heard that www.videohelp.com/tgpo is a decent host. The only drawback is that video requests are very slow.

    Uuuuuh, you got a link?

Everything on their site points to monthly, with $7.95 being the cheapest.

Getting to the point where shopping for host is vcoming down to who has the best service. Even a huge well used site wouldn't need that amount of resources.

I'm going to take a wild guess it's the hidden limits that are going to restrict it, specificall CPU usage and MySql queries. The 40lbhead.com site is no where near the max bandwidth or storage BUT the alloted CPU usage and queries are at nearly 60%. I'm assuming that if the site goes over that I'm going to9 be required to get a dedicated server for that site.

Been thinking about it for a while now for all the sites I'm running but I'm already wearing too many hats... server admin is not one I look forward to putting on.

Actually I have a dreamhost account already I play with. But their servers feel very overloaded which is why I only use it to toy around.

I'm paying more for less but the page loads are instant. One person close to the serrvers even reported a 500 or 600k download for a file which is outstanding. I'm on the east coast and goes up to about 300 which is still pretty good.

CPU usage and MySql queries are not restricted -- we are running video streaming and file storage there and get great speed also ...

    Look around at www.webhostingtalk.com

The killer on cheap hosts is the fine print concerning CPU usage, SQL connections, and PHP scripts. You DO NOT want a host that will close your whole account because a script is suddenly hacked. Smart hosts just disable PHP or otherwise lock down the script, dumb hosts delete or lock the entire account -- FTP, e-mail, HTTP, admin and all! YIKES!
