    HISTORY OF AMERICAN FOOTBALL

Football historians, those who have studied the game and its origins, place the game’s beginnings in rugby, an English game played with many similarities to football. Rugby began in eighteen twenty-three at the famous Rugby Boys’ School in England. Another cousin of the game of football is soccer; its beginnings can also be traced to English origin, being played as early as the eighteen twenties.
So American football originated from RUGBY. They both have the same shape ball and they are both played with hands. Nothing in common with (real) football except they are both team games.
Did you read past the first paragraph?

At the same time, a group of students at Princeton began playing what was then known as ‘ballown’. First using their fists to advance the ball, and then their feet
Having a quick look at the wikipedia apparently both American Football and soccer have their origins in Rugby or some other form of "football". They all basically evolved from the same game. As I said the rules changed the name didn't.
surely the FA Cup was being played before the british invented america?

I stand corrected... the post above should read both American football and Rugby have their origins in soccer or some other form of "football". Quite an interesting read here on the origins. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Football

Modern American football grew out of a match between McGill University of Montreal, and Harvard University in 1874. At the time, Harvard students are reported to have played the "Boston Game" — a running code — rather than the FA-based kicking games favored by US universities. This made it easy for Harvard to adapt to the rugby-based game played by McGill and the two teams alternated between their respective sets of rules. Within a few years, however, Harvard had both adopted McGill's rugby rules and had persuaded other US university teams to do the same..........

Princeton, Rutgers and others continued to compete using soccer-based rules for a few years before switching to the rugby-based rules of Harvard and its competitors. US colleges did not generally return to soccer until the early twentieth century.

You seem to be confused, it wasn't invented. America was a land mass discovered by Christopher Columbus an Italian sailing under the Spanish flag.

-Sure...and it was called America due to the Italian Americo Vespucci, who sailed southwards to Brazil, naming the region America or the Land of Brazil.

    I don't care

I'm not a massive fan of soccer .... I'm not even "a" fan to be honest. IMHO Australia's involvement is nothing more than "charitable", yet there's been massive hype since we have not qualified for the world cup for 32 years. I feel a massive letdown coming for a few ......

We have our very own unique national sport called Australian Rules Football, so I despise any Australians referring to soccer as football.
    If in doubt, Google it.

Was a pretty poor show againsts paraguay though. Need to play much better. Well a win against Trinidad and Tobago and we can take it easy on Sweden

    No, it wasn't only Trinidad.
It was Trinidad AND Tobago, so there were two of them, ...and Sweden only, on the other side.
    It wasn't a fair game...two against one.
So, I would say that Sweden is a moral winner.

    1st half

    Australia-Japan 0:1

I'm Australia's fan - some Croatians play for Australia. Marc Viduka is the captain.
I hope Australia will do better in the 2nd half.

No one can be crushed here in the World championship. They all play good soccer and strong defense. There will be many surprises.

  17. Well the Aussies won 3-1 with 3 goals in 8 minutes. Japan should have had a stone wall penalty though which could have made it 2-0 and a different story.

  20. It's not just a game it's about National Pride!!! That's why fans are so passionate.

I'm a Portuguese American, so I'm hoping Portugal and the US do well. I love Baseball, Football (NFL), Basketball, Soccer etc.. Nothing compares to the World Cup.

I was at game 7 at Yankee Stadium 3 years ago when the Yankees came back and beat the Red Soxs in extra innings. It was awesome I thought the stadium was going to callapse everyone was so happy. I was also at the European Cup (like world cup but only European teams) 2 years ago in Portugal and I can tell you that the passion you feel at a game where you country is playing doesn't compare to my awesome game 7 experience.

If you're a NY Yankees fan you wear the jersey to support the team but your just a fan, you'll never be a NY Yankee. In the World Cup not only am I a fan of Portugal but I'm also Portuguese. It actually means something when you tell someone where you're from and I'm damn proud to say it!!

    Right back at ya, buddy

Playing 90 minutes for a nil-all draw is hardly my idea of excitement. Give me a sport where scoring is frequent, such as AFL or cricket, and/or a sport where blokes are tough, and don't need to be stretchered off after a kick to the shins, and then seem to be up and about within 30 seconds afterwards.
    If in doubt, Google it.

Australia was bloody lucky yesterday to beat Japan.
Brazil - Croatia is today. Cant wait to see Ronaldinho, Kaka and Adriano in action.

As far as I'm concerned, if you're gonna draw nil-all, you may as well agree to that scoreline before the match and spend the 90 minutes constructively at the pub. Funnily enough, you've probably got more chance of scoring at your local than on a soccer field
    If in doubt, Google it.

it's the anticipation... of the score that's usually more exciting then the score itself (applies to local pub scores as well)
there's more then one reason why soccer is the most popular (and still growing) game in our world, and nothing you want to say will ever change that, it's better to accept this simple fact

  29. Out of the 11 games played so far there has only been one 0-0 draw, and that was not a boring game with 10 man Trinidad and Tobago battling against a Sweden team expected to win. There has been an average of 2.45 goals scored per game, with 6 goals in the first game, Germany v Costa Rica.
