Having a quick look at the wikipedia apparently both American Football and soccer have their origins in Rugby or some other form of "football". They all basically evolved from the same game. As I said the rules changed the name didn't.

Actually Rugby originated from soccer. Some guy at a school called Rugby decided to pick up the soccer ball and run with it. Hence the name of the game..

I'm not a massive fan of soccer .... I'm not even "a" fan to be honest. IMHO Australia's involvement is nothing more than "charitable", yet there's been massive hype since we have not qualified for the world cup for 32 years. I feel a massive letdown coming for a few ......

We have our very own unique national sport called Australian Rules Football, so I despise any Australians referring to soccer as football.

It was Trinidad AND Tobago, so there were two of them, ...and Sweden only, on the other side.
It wasn't a fair game...two against one.

It's not just a game it's about National Pride!!! That's why fans are so passionate.

I'm a Portuguese American, so I'm hoping Portugal and the US do well. I love Baseball, Football (NFL), Basketball, Soccer etc.. Nothing compares to the World Cup.

I was at game 7 at Yankee Stadium 3 years ago when the Yankees came back and beat the Red Soxs in extra innings. It was awesome I thought the stadium was going to callapse everyone was so happy. I was also at the European Cup (like world cup but only European teams) 2 years ago in Portugal and I can tell you that the passion you feel at a game where you country is playing doesn't compare to my awesome game 7 experience.

If you're a NY Yankees fan you wear the jersey to support the team but your just a fan, you'll never be a NY Yankee. In the World Cup not only am I a fan of Portugal but I'm also Portuguese. It actually means something when you tell someone where you're from and I'm damn proud to say it!!

Give me a sport where scoring is frequent, such as AFL or cricket, and/or a sport where blokes are tough, and don't need to be stretchered off after a kick to the shins, and then seem to be up and about within 30 seconds afterwards.

As far as I'm concerned, if you're gonna draw nil-all, you may as well agree to that scoreline before the match and spend the 90 minutes constructively at the pub. Funnily enough, you've probably got more chance of scoring at your local than on a soccer field

it's the anticipation... of the score that's usually more exciting then the score itself (applies to local pub scores as well)
there's more then one reason why soccer is the most popular (and still growing) game in our world, and nothing you want to say will ever change that, it's better to accept this simple fact

Out of the 11 games played so far there has only been one 0-0 draw, and that was not a boring game with 10 man Trinidad and Tobago battling against a Sweden team expected to win. There has been an average of 2.45 goals scored per game, with 6 goals in the first game, Germany v Costa Rica.
