I've downloaded an avi with multiple voices
its not spilt over a left/right, but there are 2 streams according to avi codec, but i can;t seem to find a tool that can let me playback just the one

If you're just looking to play the video, while selecting which language/stream you want to hear, and only that stream, you can also install a splitter (such as Haali Media Splitter), which will let you choose between the streams.
(And the discussion of streams is reminding me of the old quote from Ghostbusters, but I won't go there.)
If cameras add ten pounds, why would people want to eat them?
