  1. I finally have networked filesharing set up between three computers at work over a router. One runs XP Pro and the others run XP Home. I've run into one issue now. The Pro computer can access execute copy, paste, delete, etc. in the shared folders on the Home PCs. Neither of the Home PCS can do this on the XP machine's shared folder. For example, I put a copy of CPU-Z in each of the shared folders on each PC. Pro can execute the file fine on both of the network drives mapped to these folders. Trying to use one of the Home PCs to do the same on the Pro machine results in an error message saying I don't have permission to do this. Simple filesharing is turned on in XP Pro. What do I need to do to allow the others to access the Pro machine the same way it can access them? The pro machine has the largest HDD and I'd like to use the shared folder on it as a file swap for the others to access updates I download. As it is now, that isn't possible. I can't even copy anything out of it's shared folder.

  3. I had a problem like that when I upgraded one computer to XP Pro.

If you right click on a file or folder you will find a security tab. (If there is no security tab you have to turn on advanced features and I forget how to do that).

In the security tab most of the files will have EVERYONE listed with all access. But in my case a few files didn't have EVERYONE in that list. When I added EVERYONE and gave it full access my problem was solved.

A few days later though the EVERYONE had vanished and I had to redo it. I contacted Windows support by chat and the guy took remote control of my computer and put EVERYONE with all access on all my files and it worked for good.

I think XP Pro has some security function that is at work here. I hope this is helpful to you if you haven't solved it by now. It took me weeks and weeks to straighten this out on my system.

  4. I messed around a bit with it last night but I was doing it remotely, so I'll have to test it when I get to work today. Do the permissions hold even if Simple File Sharing is turned back of after changing them? Also I noticed that the share in question was a hidden share where the other two were not (I forgot to hide them on the other two PCs) Could that cause the issues? Perhaps hidden shares cannot be modified by default?

  5. There are too many settings in too many places for me to make sense of it. After making a change it is impossible to tell what the result will be. I hope my comments help you track down your problem but even after I solved my problem I still needed the guy from Windows to make if permanent. I mean you change the setting and the problem is solved and then a few days later the setting changes itself? What the heck is that?

  6. Classic Windows XP. Always changing something for you. I'd still like to know why my folder view options can be fine for months and suddenly I open the folder to find everything thumbnailed instead of detailed.

Anyway, it seems to be working okay this morning. I disabled SFS and changed the permissions then re-enabled it and I also unhid the one hidden folder. I'm not sure which one was causing it, but at this point I'm happy it's working and I'm not changing it back to find out which one it was
