I have a movie file, It is an avi and first time I started it I open it with media player classic and next time when I started it it came up a message “Cannot render the file.” Even I started it wth the same software as the first time.
Why? What have happened?
What can I do to fix it?

Some short answers:
#1 - Gspot (get the newer beta version)
#2 - VLC (has its own codec supply) or MediaPlayerClassic (may need add'l codecs to download)
#3 - Don't download a codec unless you are certain you need it (IOW, avoid the "Paks"). It should come with an installer and instructions.
#4 - Hard to track this down without knowing further info: Media type & contents, OS version, DX version, which codecs installed, etc.

1. At first I try to look at the file extension. Then - GSpot to see if I have successful rendering (and ofcourse codec, but for example, I can play an avi encoded with divx3 and GSpot said me the codec is not instaled)

3. I would suggest to install ffdshow. It cover the majority of decoders. This is what you need to play the file - not really codec but directshow decoder (or filter).
4. drop the file in GSpot to see if you can render it.
