    For the avi ... if that is what they truely are ? ... then gspot can be used to tell you if you have the correct decoder's installed ... if not , it will say so .

    See if the "avi" can be opened in vdub ... again , if gspot said decoder unavailable , then you should visit the tool's section , codec's ... be aware of "all-in-one" pack's ... best stay clear of these thing's for now .

    There is also a "codec snipper" , allowing you to disable codec's ... however this is not a newbie freindly method ... and as I have never needed to use such tool's to perform such function's , I am unable to advise you as to how to proceed ... other's may beable too .

    ---------------------------------------------------

    I am just wodering , have you used "system restore" ... if so , this replace's the registry with previous version , and any program's installed after this restore point have all there executable's nulled (nolonger function) , thus it's goodbye too certain registry key's ... guaranteed method to breaking thing's ... especially anything video related ...

    Stupid ms need's to warn people of that thing ... preferably now ... I'll phone them tomorrow about that crap ...

    --------------------------------------------------

    If you do have a restore point available , before using it , uninstall any program's that had been installed after it ... reboot pc ...

    Write down any detail's you need a backup off ... just incase ... dialup account info would be a good thing to backup ... if you use it ...

    Then use system restore ... this should return pc back to "normal" ... a rather ambiguous description when ms is involved ... and hopefully you will beable to get avi back up and playing .

    ====================

    Beyond this failing ... a complete system reinstall will cure all issue's ... sometime's the problem is so "ingrained" it is the only method left ... and perhap's the quickest .

    I also can't plat AVI files .... but then again, I can't plat hair either, and I'm certainly no hairdresser

    GSpot your AVI(s), and find out what codec(s) they use. Then try DXMan and or CodecSniper, and check the "health" of said codecs. Please don't say that you installed a codec pack, either. Maybe try reinstalling affected codecs. Maybe also try a software such as VideoLAN or Media Player Classic - both of which I believe use their own codecs. Some sort of indication of the name of the software that locks up might be helpful also.
    If in doubt, Google it.
