XP Antispy might help. It is a tweaker for the M$ paranoid. From the website :

The xp-AntiSpy is a little utility that lets you disable some built-in update and authentication 'features' in WindowsXP.
For example, there's a service running in the background which is called 'Automatic Updates'. I don't know what this service transfers from my machine to other machines on the internet, especially the MS ones. So I play it safe and disable such functions. If you like, you can even disable these functions manually, by going through the System and checking or unchecking some checkboxes. This will take you approximately half an hour. But why wast time when a little neat utility can do the same in 1 minute? This utility was successfully tested by lots of users, and was found to disable all the known 'Suspicious' Functions in WindowsXP. It's customiseable, but comes up with the Default settings, which are recommended.
It can be found here -> http://www.xp-antispy.org/

I don't use WMP 10, but I have it (though I've never seen the shop). Have you tried examining the options for relevant settings, such as Tools > Options... > Player tab > "Connect to the Internet (overrides other commands)" (uncheck)?

After a quick look, I'm not sure, but you might check the Player, Library and Privacy tabs in the Options.

    (Edit: Sorry, it's 3AM, and my mind's probably gone. ^_^; )

Just select "Work Offline". Or restrict it from connecting to the net via firewall, which is a good idea anyway. It should still work with embedded media.

Regardless, you still should use XP-Antispy though, particularly to disable scripts from running.

Ihave it blocked via firewall too which is maybe why I can't find this shop. It will work fine for video embedded in the pages, it won't work for direct links. You have to do a "save as" and open from your harddrive.
