Are they a good purchase?. I see that you can only record 30 min of video per mini dvds. Is this the typical thing or is there a better option. How easy do they play in a stanalone? Any other advice from people who have used them?

I wouldn't recommend one myself. The MiniDV tape type of camcorder generally has better quality and DV is much easier to edit. There are also hard drive DV camcorders on the market now, if you don't want to deal with the tapes. This site has some information on DVD camcorders:
