I have actually posted this before, but since no one seems to have the solution yet, so I re-post it again to try my luck.
I have some AVI files captured (thru 1394) from my Sony DV. Then I try to cut/edit it by virtualdub. However, I encounter such an error message
** Quote **
Couldn't locate decompressor for format "dvsd" (unknown)
VirtualDub requires a Video for Windows (VFW) compatible codec to decompress video. DirectShow codecs, such as those used by Windows Media Player, are not suitable.
** Unquote **
My PC is running Windows 2000.
I heard that Virtualdub in itself cannot handle avi files from DV. Does anyone have any idea how I can get the codec required to do this?
Thanks a lot.

found this page inwhich someone asks the same question. The answer is as follows
***************************************
Please download and install Avisynth on your PC.
Afterwards, save a textfile with content
DirectShowSource("c:\Path_And_Filename.avi")
Save this file as Video1.avs
Start Virtual Dub and open this
AVS-Textfile (like it were a real AVI-File).
Virtual Dub opens the DVSD-File now!
You can now convert the DVSD to the required compression, it worked correct with DivX 4.12
on my Notebook.
I found this Tip searching the Web with
"DV to DivX". There was a Tip from Jussi Väisänen.
****************************
It could work
good luck
