The only good codec pack is a dead codec pack. Codec packs generally are put together by people who do not understand how they work, or how they interact. They often create more problems with your machine than they ever fix, leaving you unable to play or hear certain videos.

The best solution is to install only the codecs you need, as you need them. A good starting point, if playback is you main concern, is to use a player that has it's own codecs built in, such as VLC or Media Player Classic. FFDShow is a good start codec that covers many of the basics with taking the scatter gun approach of a codec pack.

Finally, get a good identifier, such as gspot 2.52beta or avocidec. If you find you have a video you cannot play, use the identifier to tell you which codec for video or audio you need, then install just that codec.

And remember kids, friends never lets friends install codec packs.

Thank you for your useful suggestion. The problem is that I alwaus use Mpeg encoder to convert and now for few videofiles it doesn' work ( a message appears "no video data found").
I used avicodec and it says
    V. nome codec XViD Mpeg4 and A1 nome codec Mpeg layer 3
What can I do? Do you think that ffdshow will solve the issue?
    Thanks/Fabio

It may. I posted in your other thread, so check there for details, but you can find the codecs you need in the tools section to your left <-
