  1. I am using virtualdub 1.5.10. Is there a newer version that will take advantage of dual core processors? I am saving an avi using divx compression and it is not using both cores to do the work.

  2. Update your Divx encoder. The latest versions are multithreaded. You'll get a significant increase in encoding speed.

  3. I am using 6.2 of the divx.

Then both cores should work. VirtualDub uses seperate threads for input/output. Unless you are doing some heavy AVISynth filtering then the output is going far more CPU intensive though and I am not sure how long VDub has been multithreaded.

Unless you meant VirtualDubMod, then I really can't see any reason why not to update.

Virtualdub can't make the codec use both processors, so upgrading virtualdub is unlikely to help you. That said, if you had taken the time to check the tools section for virtualdub you would have seen that your version is in fact many revisions behind the current version. Unless you are using virtualdubmod, in which case you are pretty much running the latest version, as it hasn't been updated in some time.

  6. The newest version that I have seen is 1.6.15. I installed it and I still don't think the encoding is taking advantage of the dual core processing. My cpu usage never goes above 56% when I am encoding. I may try reinstalling the divx codec.

  7. If you installed Divx before the dual core processor you have the single threaded version. Where you select the codec in VirtualDUb you should see it labeled as "Divx 6.2 (2 logical CPUs)". With Xvid I have to manually enable 2 threads in the Xvid config dialogs.

Even when they are running multithreaded, you will usually only see 60 to 70 percent CPU usage (20 to 40 percent faster encoding).

  8. I have had the dual core cpu since I built the machine. The codec in virtualdub only says Divx 6.2

  9. I removed the divx and rebooted then reinstalled and I now see the codec you mentioned.

Difference between 1 and 2 cores encoding a short DV AVI clip: 52 vs 39 seconds.

  11. After reinstalling it works now and what a difference. Before it took 54 minutes to encode a 70 minute avi. After it recognized the 2 cpu's it 19 minutes to encode the same avi!
