I am new to this forum. I have been having a problem with the audio ceasing at some time during capture of Hi-8 tape on my Pinnacle Studio Plus 10.5. I read pages of threads on this capture forum and got several helpful ideas.
I can overcome my problem by stopping capture when the audio ceases and then starting a new capture at the same point.
I do not drop any frames.
My cpu runs at between 14 and 24% during capture.
I am capturing audio at 48 hz
I have captured up to 50 minutes of fine video/audio combined in one stretch.
I think the problem lies in the audio stopping when some other Windows program begins.
I am not on internet, and I have removed my security software.
I am nervous about disabling programs, however, as I am not very educated technically and do not want to cause disfunctions in my system, which I believe is described in my profile.
In one particularly good thread I read, one poster mentioned capturing while the computer was in safe mode. How would I go about doing this? And is it a good idea?
At least I can get my movies captured, but I would like to be able to do it in one shot.
Thanks.

Try booting up in safe mode with network support, and capture that way. That will stop a lot of services from being automatically started, and may help your problem. Also, are you capturing to a hard drive seperate from your operating system and software. All capture card makers recommend a second hd for capturing of video/audio.

Thanks.
I am doing all of my work on one hard drive. Do I have to install another hard drive, or is there a way to split one drive into two?
I can try the safe mode.
I also am able to proceed with my projects by starting another capture at the point where the initial one ceases, so at least I am not stymied, and I get quite a bit of capture before getting the audio knocked off.
Right now, I am into the intricacies of disc menus.
Thanks again. -
It's easy enough to install another hard drive if you have a spare IDE channel. It won't help any to partition your boot drive as the same controller channel would be writing to both partitions. You need to use a separate drive from your boot drive if the problem is being caused by your OS writing to the boot drive when you are capturing.
Capturing in safe mode, if you can do, just won't automatically load startup programs or drivers. You can try it, though. Most computers can select safe mode during boot by using a function key, F8, I believe. It varies with the computer. -
All makers of professional and semi professional capture list in the requirements, that you have a seperate HD for the capturing and encoding for video. It is a very important item. Even a fragmented HD can contribute to sync issues and problems. Even an external USB drive is fine...

Okay, thank you very much. I probably will install a second hard drive at some point. Very useful forum, this.
