Company Product pageL http://www.daytek.ca/dvr950t.html
Writes to +R/RW and -R/RW, has a 250 gb hard drive and is DivX capable. In the past, Daytek has partnered with Liteon, simply rebadging the 5001 and calling it a Daytek P30, so I'm thinking that this *might* be a Liteon LVW-5055GDL+. However, the product manual gives no indication that it can write to +R DL discs or CDR/RW.
What concerns or interests me the most is the ability for this unit to go region free and play PAL discs I've bought from Amazon.co.uk.
I'm not in a hurry to buy it, since Costco will have it on sale for $429 Cdn in August, and I figure that someone will have information about it by then.
If anyone has any info, please share/post it.
thank you.
Tom

If what concerns you most is the DivX playback and region free status, I'd just get a player like the Philips DVP-5140 that will play just about anything you want to put in it.
For a recorder, I'd go for the LG 790 that has the 250 Gig drive and all format write capability. -
Purchased a DaytekŪ DVR-950T
DVD Recorder with
250 GB Hard Disk Drive from Costco 2 wks ago in Burnaby BC Canada over the internet, not available in their stores.
At least $100 less expensive than any retail stores selling 250 GB units, local repair facilities in Richmond, free delivery by UPS.
Took 5 business days to arrive. Had been quoted 7 - 10.
Units disc drawer would not open and close with out phyiscally helping so phoned the service center next day. They asked me to take it in and it would be exchanged. The original packing styrofoam was broken so they surmised that it had been dropped at some stage causing the disc tray to not work. Very curteous and helpfull staff.
This was not an easy device for me to set up. The manual covers the basics and offering so many features it takes time and experimentation to test them and see if they function.
Having said that I'm so far very happy with what it can do. I'm recording in SP mode and it gives me over 25 hrs of time probably 30 hrs but I'm not willing to erase certain programs yet.
I have recorded to disk putting in chapters. Used the timeshift mode, an amazing feature.
Played discs recored on my computer DVD and CDs
This is very good value for a very capable feature laden recorder. Highly recomended

Hi,
I have just purchased the dvr-950t. I agree, a little difficult to get all the features figured out. Does anyone know how to recored two channels at the same time and watch a different channel?
thanks, -

250GB should give you over 100 hours at SP. A single-layered DVD is a bit less than 5GB and can hold 2h in SP. 250/5 = 50 x 2h = 100h. Even at XP, it will hold over 50hours. -
I too got this from Costco last year. I was very happy for a couple of weeks. But now I discovered a few problems.
- Cannot copy non-protected dvd to the hard drive
- Unit needs to be reseted ( power off and on ) frequently.
- Email to Daytek support got no response at all.
- Limited small # of schedules for recording.

This is an older post but an issue has come up that seems relevant
Do not have this Daytek, but I feel it is a rebaged Liteon product [it could have firmware that limits or enhances it]
Your reference to the 5055GL+ is what interests me. It was claimed elsewhere that the 5055GL+can be hacked.
I do not feel that it can be

Is this Because of CP protection and the unit will not copy to a disk

I assume that this is from the units DVD to the HDD
If non Copy Protected [CP] disks, it should do so.
Is the unit reading CP when there is none?
If so is this a unit specific problem or in all units? -
