I recently saw many DVD to iPod software guide, but not a honest evaluation about them.

As a super iPod fans, I took three days to try many iPod converters, and then took six good iPod converters for reviewing. Hope this helps! My reviews are honest and straightforward and I don't represent any of the companies whose products I test.

What is the standard of the ideal application to rip DVD video to iPod? There are some points we should take into consideration.
    1) Cost/Performance: Everybody wants to gain more with less money.
    2) Video Quality: Someone often uses the video iPod to watch movie, so the output video quality should be considered seriously. Top DVD ripper output without any loss in the video and image quality of the exports. To enjoying the high definition video is of great pleasure. Or else, not only your eyes may get hurt; the annoying jumpy and mosaics will also bother you.
    3) Audio Quality: iPod is the most popular personal stereo in the world, so the music enjoying is the basic function. Can you stand a piece of engaging music with bad conversion quality? I can't! So never choose the one that make your ears and brain suffered.
    4) Speed: Convert DVD often takes time, an hour DVD movie takes around thirty minutes to convert to mpeg-4 movie, if you have multiple DVDs to be converted, a high speed converter would be your best bet, or else, you will waste much time on the conversion, and your computer will be tied to the process.
    5) Easy to use: There are still many iPod users knew little about computer, so complicated parameter settings will strain their brain, as a result, a application with simple interface and steps is the acceptable.
    6) Personal Demands: For example, someone just wants to convert part of the DVD video, or others want the special output video format like PSP compliant forms and etc.
Concerning the above factors, I've selected six iPod converters for reference.
For more details concerning the parameters please click here.

    1. Cucusoft DVD to iPod Converter
Launch the program; you will be impressed by its simple interface. It supports the conversion of DVD to mpeg-1\2\4 \AVI. There're a series of parameters for you to set. Besides, there're other functions, such as luminance filter supported (you won't be afraid that the DVD's background is too dark), auto shutdown the computer when the job finished (you needn't stand by the computer until the job done.), thread priority settings, file-size limit setting (you needn't worry about the output file is too big for your iPod), subtitle selection and so on. Generally speaking, this software is packed of many functions but with highlight.

    2. PQ DVD to iPod Video Converter
Its white interface would show you the snow feeling, moreover, the icon has the Mac style, this is quite popular with users. It supports the conversion of DVD/ Tivo to iPod video. It supports the most import video formats including: AVI\MPG \MOV \QT \WMV \ASF \DAT \VOB \RMVB \RM \MKV and OGM, which makes it beat other similar products in the market. In addition, it is combined with many useful features, such as CPU type auto identifying whichhelp you get the optimized speed of conversion), DVD buffer setting, decss(Allows you to rip the CSS-protected DVDs), shooting angle adjusting, contrastadjusting and so on.Frankly speaking, I love this iPod converter very much. Not only for its beautiful appearance, but also for its easy of use, user can save his preferred converting mode for the following processing, which is very convenient for who has many DVDs to be converted, as you needn't set the conversion mode each time, you just get it done once and for ever.

    4. ImTOO DVD to iPod Converter
Its interface is plain, but you can feel the expert. The layout is clear and in accordance with the habit of users. It supports DVD to AAC\ MP4 \M4A \MP3. Comparing with other iPod converters, it supports three languages (English, Chinese, and Japanese). This is good news for those asia users.

Now, it’s just like a walk in the park. Super DVD to iPod Converter supports partially conversion. You can set the start point and end point freely. This helps you save much time as well as the capability of the iPod video. Moreover, you will be surprised by its high conversion speed. Some other applications need two steps to convert DVD: first convert DVD to AVI, and then convert AVI to iPod, which waste lots of time. Super DVD to iPod Converter directly converts DVD to iPod video, increasing the efficiency.

    6. YASA DVD to iPod Converter
Don’t judge its performance by the simply interface. Try it out, you will be impressed by its expert options including: 14 options for resolution setting, 5 options for frame rate, 15 options for video rate, and etc. As the conversion of DVD to MPEG 1\2\4 \AVI \WMV \DivX \RM \MOV is supported, it may satisfy the user who is strict with the output quality. Very helpful comparison! I just ordered a video iPod so I've been looking for a good program to convert DVDs to iPod formats. Your timing is great.

I have one question, though. Do any of these programs allow me to set custom resolutions, or do they all use presets?

Out of all the above apps, how many use libavcodec/format? Quality should basically be the same for all that do.

Using lavc is ok as long as it is an external dll or they release source. But I have to wonder how many of them pay MPEG-4 license fees.

easiest and best quality i've seen yet is: latest version of Nero! Nero Recode specifically
can load in individual video files to be converted (including vobs) OR entire video_ts folder
which will automatically output one ipod video ready "main movie" only file! recode has
an ipod video profile built in...just select it and good to go! fantastic piece of software now
also makes your ipod video (or other mp4 devices) more fun.

  8. I have tried countless DVD to iPod software programs over the past several days and have found only one that is equal to Nero Recode (perhaps better)

So far I have found less artifacting with Jesterware DVD Rip to iPod.

  9. From the list Edison provided I use and recommend Cucusoft DVD to iPod Converter. I tried YASA DVD to iPod Converter and was quite impressed too. You can find them both on a 50% discount here: http://www.downloads32.com/discounted-multimedia.htm (look down the page for YASA, check the main page for Cucusoft). Guess you can get both for the price of one. Not a bad deal at all but I'm happy with Cucusoft for now. 8)
