Did anybody ever tried to hook up this nifty machine (Philips DVP5960) via its USB port to a computer to play DivX files, stored at one of its hard drives? It such thing even possible? It probably requires some software to make the cmputer act as USB mass storage via one of its USB ports. Any thoughts?

I expect it will only read data from directly connected devices (dvdroms/usb memory/HD's). I don't believe it has the hardware necessary for interfacing with a pc and accessing a HD within.

I thought so - unless somebody writes software, making computer's USB port to behave exactly like the mass storage device (hard drive emulation). I am not a programmer - but should it be hard to achieve? Hmm...

Well you wanna use Philips DVP5960 to play your own DivX files, stored on your computer's HDD - directly from your computer's HDD, without the need to have them burned onto DVD+R or copy onto USB memory. Doesn't it make sense?

According to the manual, it will only play JPEG, MP3 or WMA through USB.

In that case I have discovered an undocumented, hidden, yet very cool feature. I have loaded DivX coded movie (AVI, 800MB) on my 1G USB memory stick and watched whole movie off the memory stick on DVP5960 with no problems whatsofever.
I have only purchased the system yesterday and am truly impressed with its quality as well as the USB connectivity feature. Hooking it up to my comp and make content of one of my HDD's visible via its USB is my ultimate goal. -
So then if it plays the movie off the memory stick then all you would need is software to make your harddrive look like one of the accepted devices? If that software exists then it would make this already attractive player look even better. Has anyone heard of such a thing?

Look here for info on what I have tested so far.... The USB will also play Divx..

Just get an external HD. You can then connect the HD to your pc, copy all the files you want to it, then connect it to your player. Works the same as messing with small memory sticks.Google is your Friend
