I want to take a DVD that i own and make a .avi file with ffmpegX.
After doing a 2 hr search and to how to's on the ffmpegX web site i thought i understood it's a fairly easy 2 step to do this.
Using the latest version of ffmpegX: First rip the disk with MTR then using DVD2oneX2 to get it to fit on a single layer DVD, (sidebar these two steps is haw i make a backup of all my DVD's the copy looks great hard to tell the diff between the original and the copy.)
Back to my problem, I followed the step by step instructions on ffmpegX's site i take the Video_ts folder drop it on the left panel and then using one of the presets , started with Divx mencoder then in the video tab i set the aspect ratio, selected autocrop in the filters tab tryed several different image size and bit rate usually i select 2 cd in mode 1.
Lets say that the movie is 110min in lengh if i set the no of cd's to 3 i get a longer file 2cd's smaller file.
Audio iselect AC3 and make sure the sample rate and bit rate, i skip the subtitle section, hit preview looks great with sound, no other adjustments are made.
The problem is when the encoding is done all i get is a solid green picture from begining to end AND no audio, tryed a few other varions same result
The instructions, once i understood them are varey simple.
Why won't it work?![]()
Thanks

While I love ffmpegX for -almost- all transcoding, for VIDEO_TS sources I usually use MPEG Streamclip. Drop the first VOB (of the ripped main title) into the app's window and it will ask you if you want to open all the related VOBs (you do), then "Save as AVI...".
If the VOBs play in the MPEG Streamclip window, the title will probably convert fine. You can set in and out points for a test, as well.

I tried slipstream but is not doing what it;s suposed to
1st thing i did was to drop the first VOB file i was told im missing the MPEG2 playback component
Any VOB file i droped in slipstream told me there are time code breaks would you like to fix them now
I said yes this happened 3 out of 5 files
i never got any sound or audio just the playback strip this is nuts , I just want to convert a DVD into a simple .avi file or Divx
i looked around the web and came accross a lot of utilities to do this, but guess what, they were all for pee cee's
Is this just not doable on a mac? I don't believe that it's can't be done i have been trying for at least 20 to 30 hrs on this, i hsve never spent this much time on anything thst should be a 2or 3 step prosses,

Perhaps try not running it through DVD2OneX? Give ffmpegX the original VIDEO_TS folder, choose .AVI preset, and under the 'video' tab set the resolution to be the same as the VIDEO_TS and also set the framerate to be the same (NTSC in the U.S. PAL everywhere else IIRC). Click on the 'best' button for it to calculate the best bitrate for the video. Under 'audio' tab set it for MP3 or AAC or whatever you want... 192kbps is a good rate.
Try it, tell us how it works.
