This is the result of 2 prior posts on videohelp's forums. I have to distribute video DVDs to a group that has many members with older standalone DVD players. I will be burning on Taiyo Yuden (Japan) DVD-R discs.

I will be buying a new burner specifically for this because my prior Sony was not up to it. I've narrowed it down to a Philips BenQ 1655 with LightScribe, a NEC ND-6570A or a NEC ND-3550A. I'm tending toward the BenQ 1655. Recommendaions would be appreciated for any BenQ, NEC or other drive that will write for older standalone players and also write LightScribe and -RW.

    TIA.

All seem to be good. I have the NEC ND-3550A, and it's excellent. It loves TY, but it has (so far) taken everything I've thrown at it, except for a few bad Ritek G05s. The BenQ also has a good reputation. However, the 3550a doesn't do LightScribe, and Taiyo Yuden's aren't LS-capable discs.

I just bought this Samsung burner with LightScribe and 5x RAM writing. Writing quality has been excellent so far. I don't use LightScribe so I can't comment on the quality of that. This drive is a bit slower at loading/mounting discs than most drives, but otherwise I can find no other faults. OEM drive comes with Nero Express software.

Anyway, it gets a 5-egg rating from the reviews posted there.
