My dad took some video on his digital camera and wanted me to burn it to DVD. The files he uploaded are .avi files, but when I import them into Vegas 6, I only get the audio track, even though when I go into my computer and click the file, I can see the video as well.

I normally import .avi's from my camcorder with no problem. What gives?

    Which digital camera?
Canon's use MJPEG. Some Kodaks use Quicktime. Some use MPeg4.

Try it in Windows Movie Maker.

If WMM doesn't work, use GSpot or AVICodec to get codec details of your AVI file and post them here.

The camera is a Canon. GSpot says:

    Type: AVI
    IMRR: n.s.
    I/L: Not supported

    4CC: MJPG
    Bitrate: 2561 kb/s
    FPS: 15.000
    Qf: 2.223 bits/pixel

Audio is 88 kb/s, mono, Fs: 11024 Hz

Says 97% is video data and 3% is audio data.

MJPEG should work in WMM, VirtualDub and Vegas. Check your "Video Codecs Properties" under "Sound Video and Game Controllers" in device manager. Vegas should have loaded a mcmjpg32.dll.

Most of the consumer video suites have added full support for digital camera video modes in recent versions (e.g. Premiere Elements, Sony Movie Studio, ULead products, Pinnacle products). You can also buy PictVideo, Morgan or Mainconcept MJPeg codecs directly but this shouldn't be necessary.

vegas will not automatic load MJPEG files ever except if you use the latest update from sony , you have to install a MJPEG codec first usually (even then -- some mjpeg files require a 3rd party codec)

    mcmjpg32.dll is a main concept dll ..

The problem with Windows and XP is that codec properties do not identify the program that installed the codec. Once the codec is installed multiple programs will see and use the MJPeg codec. I've had my Canon S60 for about a year and a half. The codec was on my machine and Vegas could import the Canon avi file to a DV or uncompressed timeline from day one.

I would assume, but can't verify, that a MJPeg codec gets installed if you load the software on the Canon CD that came with the camera. I've never had the need to install that software (Arcsoft?)
