Hi there. I try not to post problems as I can usually find the answer somewhere or other on the site or in the forum. However, this has me doing some serious head scratching.
I recently installed an ASUS DRW 1608P and it has been burning DVD's no problem..I can watch DVD's, VCD's, and listen to CD's! Unfortunately, when I try to burn an audio cd things get a bit strange. Using Nero 7 Ultra, the software acts as if it's burning but there's no buffer underrun and nothing actually goes to disc..when the estimated time runs out the actual time counter keeps going..all the while no actual burning is going on! There are no error messages. After forcing Nero to stop using the task manager I then find that the cd is stuck in the drawer and can only be released by restarting the pc. I also tried using Ulead Movie factory which came bundled with the ASUS..same thing..acts as if it's burning but nothing's happening! So I'm thinking it must be the OS or the drive??
I have the latest firmware, have updated all drivers, repaired Nero, tried various things from a variety of helpful sources..all without success!!
I know this isn't strictly video related..but I know there are guys here who really know optical drives!
So in summary, new ASUS drive, reads and writes DVD's, reads cd's...WON'T write cd's!!!????
All help gratefully, gratefully, recieved..thanks in advance!!!

If your trying to make an audio CD from anything other than *.WAV then Nero will have to decode the source before it can burn it to disc. It should take extra time.
If your burning *.WAV files and they arent 44.1kHz, and stereo, then Nero will have to convert them. This will take extra time as well.
Try a test using a CD-RW with 44.1kHz, stereo *.wav files, and another test with *.mp3. See for yourself.
BTW, Asus 1608P drive should be equivelent to Pioneer DVR-109. (1608P2 is a DVR-110)
--edit--
Better yet, compile the same disc but change the "Recorder / Choose Recorder" to 'Image drive' to see if waiting will result in anything. If it does, change the recorder back to 1608P and burn that image.

Thanks Gastorgrab! I actually managed to solve the problem by the use of a tool known as 'a fit of temper'!!! I got rid of Nero 7 Ultra and Ulead Movie Factory (uninstalled in 'add\remove software' then deleted all the remaining folders etc., , rebooted and loaded up Nero 6.3.1.18F. Worked like a dream..burned 4 cd's at full speed no problem. I figure there must have been a software conflict between Ulead and Nero..even though they were both bundled with the ASUS.
Anyway, thanks for your help..I should have tried the uninstall thing before posting, however, as dvd's were burning and I could watch dvd, vcd, and listen to cd's..I overlooked the obvious.
