  1. Hi,

I have had a recurring problem that has been extremely irritating with this burner for over a year now. The weird thing is that the problem is sporadic and my burns will work part of the time but the rest I will get coasters.

Problem: When I burn a dvd (the problem only applies to burning dvds, not cds) it will burn 100% successful everytime, however when the disc is being verified, it will fail and find corrupted sectors. Upon a further scan using DVDInfoPro, it is usually the case that there are 1-5 regions that contain large corruptions. It is a very peculiar problem. As I mentioned, sometimes I am able to get a burn without the problem but 80-90% of the time I get bad discs.

Any suggestions? I have already tried a lot of different things.

I should note that I am using the bulk version, and have the firmware: B7W9. I am aware that the bulk drives have a different firmware (G7V9), however, I am unable to flash the bulk firmware version. I think it must be because I have the retail firmware (must have flashed retail by accident when I first got the drive).

I have a Benq 1620 and have never had a problem, but I only use high qualtiy media (Verbatim MCC or Fuji TY) You are using horrible media......Take a look at this site Media ID Quality Guide. Go down to where it says 4th Class Media, you'll find Daxon=BenQ/Acer. Try using better blank media. I recommend using Fuji (TY) or Verbatim (MCC) and I bet you never get a coaster.....Have use over 300 of these discs, and ot one coaster ever....[/url]

  3. I don't think it is a media issue. I've tried several different types of media (including verbatim) and still had the same problem.

It's actually bizarre, cause I always check that list before buying dvds, and I could've sworn that at the time of purchasing the Benq discs, they were in 2nd or 3rd category.

I should also mention that earlier in the year I'd burned about 50 of the Benq discs (the ones that you are referring to from the image I posted) in a friends computer with a Benq 1640 without having one bad disc. So, I really do not think it is a media problem

Instead of using DVDINFO PRO to scan your discs use CD/DVD SPEED. There's no difference between using the "G" series firmware and the "B"series. The "G" series was for OEM drives and "B" was for official BENQ firmware. Your drive having B7W9 firmware is fine. As suggested use better dvd media like TAIYO YUDEN which can SONY & FUJI dvd media as long as the spindles say MADE IN JAPAN those are the ones to use. VERBATIM is another good one to use. Remember that the 1620 drive likes DVD+R media than DVD-R but by using BENQ'S QSUITE tool DVD-R media can be burned fine. Enabling QSUITE's SOLID BURN function will be good to use. I suggest you check out the BENQ FORUM at Cdfreaks.com for more info. When scanning discs with CD/DVD SPEED scan at 8x.

I should also mention that earlier in the year I'd burned about 50 of the Benq discs (the ones that you are referring to from the image I posted) in a friends computer with a Benq 1640 without having one bad disc. So, I really do not think it is a media problem
The 1640 drive is a great all around dvd burner just because you used the same media in your friends 1640 drive doesn't mean it will work well in the 1620. Firmwares are different in each drive which the write strategies could be better or sometimes worse depending on dvd media that you use. The 1620 & 1640 are totally different drives in terms of firmware. I flash my drives back and forth using different firmware depending on the dvd media that I'm using. That's one reason why I love BENQ drives because the drive can be flashed back and forth with older/newer firmware.

My two cents...my BenQ 1620Pro is now a paperweight and has been replaced with my LG 4167B...and my old LG 4040B is also still going strong.
I had WAY too many coasters with my BenQ....not 100%....maybe not even 50%...but too many for my liking.
Strangely...mine liked +R more than -R media....yours doesn't even seem to like +R very much.

I do however agree that Daxon and BenQ media is crap....no arguements there from me.

By looking at the scans though...I'd check for something running in the background of your computer....like Skype. I had a major issue with Skype in my startup...removed it...now no coasters at all....not even with my Ridata 8x +R media.
