  1. This may be a silly question, but what version of DivX and Xvid does ffmpegX spit out at the other end. I think it's currently 4.1.2 for DivX, but I'm not sure, and am interested - as DivX is up to 6.5 now. Is the codec based on a different version number source, and is the open source one different?

Sorry for all the probably stupid questions!

    Cheers

  2. Versions doesn't matter much, as there are many different codecs each one claiming a different numbering. In general you may consider that ffmpeg's mpeg-4 is DivX-4 compatible, or DivX-5 compatible if you also enable b-frames. It is also important to understand that all codecs in this family, be they named DivX, XviD, or Pete the Blue GorillaX, are simply flavors of mpeg-4.

Do also note that the version number that the DivX QT component gives is based on what fourcc the file has. The ffmpegX DivX encoder sets it to DIVX, which the DivX QT decoder considers to be 4.1.2.

  4. ah that makes a lot of sense - so whichever fourcc it has rules the version.

I realise that 3ivx, Xvid, et al are merely mpeg-4, I just didn't know if within these flavours, there was progression in standards (if you see what I mean).

    Thanks!

  5. The standard is not about the actual implementation, so each implementation of mpeg-4 will have its own performances (each mpeg-4 codec may have different quality, speed, etc).
