  1. I am getting faint vertical wavy lines floating (lright to left) on my input from my video cable set top box. Can this be eliminated/minimized by software before i capture the same or later by running through a 'video cleaner (noise remover)' as my cable supplier is doing nothing about it from some time.

I need to record in SVCD PAL format for playback on VCD and DVD players

Those line's are associated noise of combined signal ... as this is a "subscribed service" , it also contain's specific form's of encryption .

These signal's do not affect normal output to tv , but will cause capture device's headache's ... it is best to treat the signal as in case "2" , as mentioned below .

    1:

Check reception signal or topest box is tuned correctly .

    2: Normal method of capture

Pass the cable to vcr .
Video output from rca to capture device
Audio output to linein (need rca to stereo headphone jack)

You will find this help's .

Rule : Never pass video + audio through capture device , this will degrade picture quality .

    3:

If internal capture card , it may be in the wrong slot on motherboard ... change card's location and see if signal in capture has improved .

    4:

Actual capture device at fault , replace .

    =======================

The use of software driven filter's is a "hit and miss" affair ... the wrong one used , not setting the filter strength to correct level , and on , and on ...

Adding filter's during the actual capture to clean it up will tax the system , and dropped frame's may be the result .

You really have to make sure you have the best possible input source , before taking action with video cleaning filter's first .

Just a question, how does different slot affect video quality? I've actually heard it before, but don't understand why. Thanks.

Distance from CPU or other high RF generating chips or interrupts that share with the slot are two reasons. The PCI slot nearest the AGP slot can be a problem.
