    Hi,

Currently I capture everything to computer as AVI and then add a few titles, cut a few bits out, add a few fade ins & outs etc. Once I have the footage laid out, I then render the file to MPG2. This of course can take hours to encode as you well know.

I'm trying to save a bit of time by recording straight to a DVD recorder - ripping the mpg2 file onto the hard drive and then doing some basic cuts, titles and fades etc, and then hopefully recreating another MPG2 file.

Can I do this without any major quality loss? Is their a program that will only re enode the sections of my mpg2 file that need re drawing ?

How do people with DVD camera recorders and the new harddisk recorders get their footage edited
    on computer without qulaity loss.

If somebody can point me towards some decent software, I'd appreciate it.

For the record, I already have TMPGenc, but the tools dont allow fades or titles ( I think ? )

I also have Pro coder, but it would attempt to re compress the whole file again.

    thanks
    Scott

TMPGDVDAuthor does what you want and TMPG MPG Editor does as well . These are my favourites and I`m very happy with them , they do what they say on the tin . I`m sure others will add theirs as well .

tmpgenc dvd author for simple editing, no quality loss
mpeg video wizard dvd for advanced editing, just quality loss for the transitions

Thanks for the info, but I can't see where TMPGenc author or TMPGenc tools will allow me
to add any fades or titles. I understand how I could create titles in a 3rd party program, and bring them into the mix, but I'm looking for a program if possible that also allows me to add a few fades
    as well.

I read that mpeg Video Wizard requires Nero. Is that correct, and can I still author in my preferred programs other than Nero ?

    thanks

MPEG Video Wizard creates a new MPG file when you are done editing. You can use any DVD authoring application you want to after that.

Some editing software (like Vegas) allows you to stream a firewire DV or analog video output of your completed AVI edit... instead of doing a software MPEG2 (DVD) encode, why not send the output to a DVD recorder for real time MPEG2 capture of the finished project? The transitions and graphics will look better that way (MPEG Video Wizard is somewhat limited in that area).

womble mpeg video wizard gets my vote...very simple to use and fast. load up the mpeg from your dvd recorder, do a few snips here and there..fades/transitions..etc...then render the new mpg file (as stated before, only the fades and title frames would be re-rendered, the rest of the frames, including straight cuts would simply be copied over to the new file).

If you're going to be doing this sort of thing often you might want to just get a good hardware mpeg2 encoding capture card. Then you can cap it straight to pc, do your edits and burn when ready.

Back when I borrowed a handheld dvd-cam for a wedding i did I used womble mpeg video wizard exclusively for the video, just doing simple cuts and fades and it turned out great. the only other thing you would have to do going the capture card route would be to encode the audio to AC3...i believe the standalone recorders do that for you...so it's a tradeoff there.
